코로나바이러스가 미국 대학 입시에 미치는 영향
전 세계가 COVID-19가 몰고 온 Pandemic으로 고통받고 있습니다. 전염병은 국적과 나이, 성별을 가리지 않고 온 인류에게 평등하게 위협적이지만, 안타깝게도 위협에 노출되는 위험은 사회 시스템이 취약하고 보장이 잘 갖춰져 있지 않은 저개발 국가와, 사회적 약자들에게 더 고통스럽게 다가오고 있습니다. 그중에서도 COVID-19로 인해 학교에 등교하지 못하는 상황이 발생하면서 학생들은 누구보다도 크게 변화된 환경으로 인해 어려움과 혼란을 겪고 있습니다.
특히 입시를 앞둔 고 3 학생들은 불확실성에 대한 스트레스가 다른 학생과는 비교가 되지 않을 것입니다. 하지만 이런 때일수록 탄탄하게 학업계획을 잡아 환경에 동요되지 않고, 성실하게 학업을 수행해 나가는 기본에 충실할 때입니다. 전 세계의 학생들이 공부하고 있는 미국 대학의 경우, 누구보다도 코로나 사태가 몰고 온 변화를 가장 잘 인지하고 있습니다. 학생들의 입학지원과 학업계획에 차질이 없도록 변화된 입학심사 규정을 발표하고 있으니 이를 잘 주시하고 차분하게 지원을 준비한다면 위기를 전략적인 기회로 활용할 수 있을 것입니다.
Standardized Testing
미국 대학의 입시에서 중요한 부문을 차지하고 있는 표준 시험 점수 제출을 면제하거나, 시험 점수를 내지 않아도 입학심사를 받을 수 있도록 규정을 변경 적용하는 대학들이 늘고 있습니다. 많은 미국의 명문 대학들이, 미국 대학의 입시에서 시험 점수를 면제하거나, 옵션으로 선택할 수 있는 방안들을 발표하고 있습니다.

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has created insurmountable challenges in scheduling tests for all students, particularly those from modest economic backgrounds, and we believe this temporary change addresses these challenges.

Johns Hopkins University will be test-optional for the Class of 2025
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to students around the world—from difficulties in remote learning and online access to canceled testing, extra-curricular activities and enrichment opportunities.
Because testing availability and access will be severely limited this year, Johns Hopkins is adopting a 1-year test-optional policy for the Class of 2025 (students applying for entry in the fall of 2021).
Stanford University, Undergraduate Admsision
Testing update for Fall 2021 applicants
For students applying for admission to Stanford’s Class of 2025, which will enter the university in Fall 2021, Stanford will review applications with or without standardized test scores, leaving the decision in the hands of the applicant. There will be no penalty for choosing not to submit scores. This update includes students who are submitting a transfer application for entry to Stanford in Fall 2021.
University of California, Undergraduate Admission
Test-optional for fall 2021 and fall 2022: Campuses will have the option to use ACT/SAT test scores in selection consideration if applicants choose to submit them, and will develop appropriate policies and procedures to implement the Board’s decision.
Test-blind for fall 2023 and fall 2024: Campuses will not consider test scores for California public and independent high school applicants in admissions selection, a practice known as “test-blind” admissions. Test scores could still be considered for other purposes such as course placement, certain scholarships and eligibility for the statewide admissions guarantee.
New standardized test: Starting in summer 2020 and ending by January 2021, UC will undertake a process to identify or create a new test that aligns with the content UC expects students to have mastered to demonstrate college readiness for California freshmen.
Elimination of the ACT/SAT test requirement: By 2025, any use of the ACT/SAT would be eliminated for California students and a new UC-endorsed test to measure UC-readiness would be required. However, if by 2025 the new test is either unfeasible or not ready, consideration of the ACT/SAT for freshman admissions would still be eliminated for California students.
Elimination of writing test: The University will eliminate altogether the SAT Essay/ACT Writing Test as a requirement for UC undergraduate admissions, and these scores will not be used at all effective for fall 2021 admissions.

미국 대학의 입시에서 아주 중요한 역할을 하는 과외활동.
사회적 거리 두기가 일상으로 자리 잡은 코로나 상황에서 할 수 있는 특별활동을 고민하는 것은 이제 모든 학생들의 새로운 도전과 과제가 되었습니다. 모든 국가가 동일하게 공공기관에서의 인턴십이나 자원봉사활동 등이 대면활동으로 지원되지 않는 가운데, 코로나 상황에 적합한 특별활동을 계획하고 실천에 옮기는 학생들을 주목해 볼 만합니다.
각국의 코로나 일상을 촬영해 개인 SNS 계정에 올리거나, 지역 방송국 등에 리포트를 하는 학생 기자들의 활동부터, 마음 맞는 친구들과 합심하여 온라인으로 바자회를 개최해 수익금을 소외아동들에게 기증한 학생들까지 온라인의 일상이 새롭게 시작되었습니다.
그리고 다양한 회사들이 온라인 인턴십으로 학생들을 모집하고 있으며, 프로그래밍과 관련된 online competition 등도 개최되고 있습니다.
현재의 상황을 내가 처한 환경에서 어떻게 극복하고 도전해 나갈 수 있는지를 보여주는 것은 오히려 코로나 위기를 기회로 만들게 될 것입니다. 학생으로서의 치열한 고민과 아이디어가 있다면 아무리 사소한 활동이라도 값지게 평가받을 수 있을 것입니다.
